As a child, I loved to read. I was often so engrossed in a book that I tuned out the external world (including, according to my mother, a time when the house was on fire – a small kitchen fire – and I didn’t even hear her yell Fire! Fire!).
So, I’ve often thought about how I would introduce the joy of reading to my preschool aged daughter.
The Tessy & Tab Reading Club has really thought this out, and has introduced a reading club especially for 2-6 year olds. This reading program was developed to support the Six Skills for Early Literacy endorced by the US Department of Education, and as a parent, I think they really have hit the mark on how to introduce reading!
The Tessy & Tab Reading Club is a child’s magazine that is mailed to your home (addressed to your child) twice per month. When it arrives, I make sure that my daughter sees that she received an envelope (she loves that!). We open the envelope together and she immediately wants me to read the magazine. Tessy & Tab are a duck and a kangaroo who go on adventures that children can relate to. I really wish we had the Airplane Trip magazine prior to our latest plane trip! We read through the magazines together, pointing out the featured letter and number throughout the book. She loves the colorful pictures and easy to understand stories, while I really love that the magazines are thick enough that they don’t bend easily!
The Tessy & Tab Reading Club also caters to parents by sending a Parent’s Guide to Building Early Reading Skills in the first shipment. In addition, parents receive an email prior to the arrival of the magazine, which explains how they can use the magazine with their child. The Tessy & Tab website also contains fun “extras” like coloring sheets and activities.
