Reading Always

alwaysbook thumb Reading Always Here in my household, books are the thing! We love them and can’t get enough of them. We love picture books, pop-up books, song books, sappy books, funny books, and books that make us think. Sometimes the very best books are the ones that get us to talking. I love when I can read a book that starts a conversation that is meaningful for my son and I. Always is the kind of book that starts such a moment. A book about a mom answering her son’s question…Will you love me when I….?

Sometimes, as a mom, I find myself getting caught up in the “should”s and “shouldn’t”s. It’s bound to happen when time is short, the to do list is long, and the little man wants some attention. I loved reading Always. It was time to snuggle, read, and say “yes, baby. I will always love you.” The illustrations are sweet and simple. The wording is lyrical. It’s just the kind of book you want to read just before bed and your little one’s eyes are slowly closing.

We actually have 3 books that we read at bedtime everynight, but my favorite is Goodnight Moon. That is always the last one we read and then we go around the room saying goodnight to everything. :)

My son’s favorite bedtime book right now is “It’s Raining Pigs & Noodles.” It’s a really cute poetry book.

We really like to read “Time for Bed” by Mem Fox. If you like folk music, The Peter Yarrow Songbook: Sleepytime Songs with CD was just published and is also really wonderful. Thanks. (Blogged about your giveaway in my Full to the Brim post today.)

While away on vacation in Maui of all places we happened upon a store/gallery that was devoted to a set of books called the adventures of Rip Squeak. We bought them all and the kids love them. The artwork is amazing and the stories are a bit more complex so they inspire discussion about plot and lots of “what does that word mean?”
