While I consider my family fairly environmentally friendly, there are definitely some improvements we can make. I know that taking some small steps will not only improve our impact on the environment, but in many cases can also make an impact on our wallet! Here are our New Year’s Resolutions for this upcoming year, to improve our carbon footprint. Please comment below to let me know what resolutions you have made!
- Decreasing our heating bill – there are not too many changes we can make here, but I’ve done a few things to use less heat. First off, last year we had a storm door installed. We didn’t have one before, and it has definitely made an improvement in the temperature of our front room. I also use blankets on the couch at night so I don’t have to raise the heat, and keep the temperature low when I’m working at home alone.
- More recycling – we have a pay as you throw trash program in my town, so the more we recycle, the more we save (it benefits the town financially also, as they are able to sell the recyclables, while they have to pay to get rid of trash). While my family already recycles, I know there are still some areas of improvement. To make it easier, I plan to have a bag out and ready for recyclables in our kitchen.
- Less consumption – I’m really going to work hard this year to simply buy and consume less. Any ideas on how to make this work?

“More recycling” is on my list too. And finding out more about my city’s recycling guidelines is the way that I intend to start…
