As you may know, with my husband’s job, we move a lot. It means that as a couple we’ve lived in two countries outside of the US. Introducing other cultures and languages to our sons is important to us. Currently, my sons have been learning Spanish at school and at home. In the area where we live, you are just as likely (if not more so) to hear Spanish as English. While my husband and I aren’t native speakers, nor completely fluent, it’s nice to have help wherever we can find it. We’ve been watching Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish with our sons. I really appreciate the way it helps children develop a familiarity and comfort with Spanish.
The Professor Parrot Speaks Spanish DVD involves four children, two of whom speak Spanish and two that speak Spanish. When they can’t seem to play together, Professor Parrot steps in to help them learn how to communicate by teaching them their numbers, colors, and more in Spanish. My youngest son, who has been learning Spanish and English since he was 3 months old, loves Professor Parrot and would watch this DVD repeatedly if I let him. Along with watching the DVD, you can print out a fun activity book from the website. We’ve also enjoyed listening to Professor Parrot’s Sound Beginnings audio CDs. These two CDs have 15-minute segments of Spanish, English, German, Japanese, French, Chinese, Russian, and Hebrew. Listening to these CDs may help children develop an ‘ear’ (and a tongue) for the different languages.
