My son has never really been a sleeper. When he was a baby, he’d regularly wake up during the night, but our biggest problem has always been his wake up time. A year or so ago, he woke up somewhere between 4:30am and 5:00am, and while it’s definitely gotten better, he’s still often up way too early. And, when he’s up, he’s up — wide away and ready to go. He’s too young to learn how to tell time, so we recently put a Good Nite Lite in his room, in the hopes that he’d start to understand when it’s appropriate to wake up.
The Good Nite Lite uses behavioral modification techniques to teach little ones that nighttime is for sleep. At nighttime, the Good Nite Lite glows as a bright moon. It’s obvious, but not overly obtrusive. Then, at a preset time in the morning, the light changes from a moon to a sun, indicating that it’s okay to wake up. The sun isn’t too bright, so it doesn’t wake my son up, it just lets him know that it’s okay to get up.
We’ve been using the Good Nite Lite for a few weeks now, with good success. My son has started getting up at a more reasonable 6:00-6:30am (the sun lights at 6:00am). I think he’s also starting to understand that night is for sleep.
