Shooing My Sleepless Nights Away with Seagate & Giveaway

by Chris on June 10, 2009

If it isn’t the little boys that love to keep mommy awake or the princess, um, dog that likes to check on things in the middle of the night, it’s me with my chronically over thinking brain that leave sleep impossible many nights. One of the many worries that occasionally flit through my mind….what would I do if I lost everything on my computer hard drives. In this day and age, I rely, like many, on my computer to fulfill so many roles. It maintains my recipes, my to-do lists, my resume, many documents relevant for my writing and for my ‘on-hold’ career, and it contains the pictures that I just can’t imagine losing. I’ve backed up most of my data on our desktop but the way things seem to go…it is just as likely to have both fail at the same time as just one. Our data isn’t the only concern…what about the computer itself and all of the programs I used daily. While it may not be impossible to download the programs again, it certainly is a huge time-drain.

In enters my new Replica from Seagate. It has the ability to back up my computer seamlessly. Thank goodness for simple solutions! All you have to do is plug it in and hit ‘okay.’ It automatically begins a scan for software updates for the Replica, installs the necessary components, and begins the back up. From the moment I plugged it in until it began the official back up process was four minutes. Now my computer is, for me, pretty full and it took less than 4 hours for the first large back up. Not too bad! Surprisingly, it didn’t slow me down and I was able to work as it worked without any delays. Now I’m happy to say that I haven’t had to do a system restore (Please, oh Gods of Dell. I would rather not have to test this out soon.), but it appears to be a very easy and simple process , as long as you’ve allowed your Replica to do it’s job and back up. In addition to a system restore, the Replica can also help to move your data from one hard drive to another. If you have two computers you’d like to keep safe, a 500 GB multi-PC and dock set is available.

The perfect gift for computer-using fathers and grads, you can find more info about the Seagate Replica here.

Congratulations to Lori W., Jennifer B., and Shilo B. This contest is now closed. It is with much excitement that we can offer our readers an opportunity to win their own “piece of mind” with a Seagate Giveaway. One grand prize winner will receive a 250 GB Seagate Replica (worth 129.99) and two runners up will each receive a 320 GB FreeAgent Go (worth 89.99). For an entry please answer this question in our comments: How do you currently back up your data?

To earn an additional entry each, please become a fan of Seagate on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Seagate-Technology/27335728124 and/or follow on Twitter at http://twitter.com/Seagate. Once you’ve done either or both, come back to leave a separate comment for each thing that you’ve done. For US Residents only. Please no PO Boxes. This contest ends June 18 at 11:59 pm ET.

Thank you so much for the chance to win.

I currently back up my data here and there on online storage sites like Snapfish and Flickr, but it’s a pain and I definitely have privacy concerns. This would be so great to win, I have so many albums and home videos I’d love to be able to keep safe in case of a crash.

I have an external hard drive that I copy my embroidery files, my music, and my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles to. I MEAN to do it once a month, but the truth is that I usually only get around to it when I know my mother is coming. My computer tries to hide when she comes because she’s very careless. She waves the mouse around and clicks randomly, and I never know what’s going to be lost once she’s been on my computer.

I currently back-up critical (i.e. recently modified) files using an online site but there are privacy concerns and it’s slow. Periodically, I back up less critical files usings DVD’s and it’s REAL slow to burn DVD’s but I’m confident the data is safe.

Well, I’m sad to say that I don’t actually backup any of my data currently. I have some of it on flash drives from moving it back and forth to various places, and I probably have different version copies on my laptop and my PC, but no actual, real, intentional backup of anything really. Needless to say, I could really use this bad boy (or one of the runner up slightly less bad boys :) to keep my stuff safe. Thanks for the super contest!

I am so embarrassed to admit this, but the way we back up our data is every once in a while we burn CD’s of our important documents, files, etc. It is so ancient, yes I know, and it is also so irresponsible, and truly my husband and I have no excuse when we lose data, which we did indeed lose in spades last July when our computer died and we had to have the hard drive rebuilt. Ever since then we have been wanting this very Seagate Replica to help us stay on top of backing up our files. It would be such an unexpected surprise if I could present my husband one of these, he would be so thrilled. It would truly break us out of our routine of burning CD’s on occasion and keep us protected in the future from losing important files, and precious image files, which is a lot of what we lost last summer when our computer died. Thanks so much for the chance to enter.

We laboriously copy file folders across our wireless router onto another (mostly idle) PC. Where “laboriously” is the key word… A good alternative would be very welcome.

Reply

217 Mollie G. June 18, 2009 at 7:41 pm

For specific items, we tend to move copies via flash drive — a 4Gb flash drive holds as much as six or seven CDRoms, and only takes about half the huge amount of time it would take to burn all those files onto CD. Would be nice to not have to physically move anything around, and “peace of mind” would be nice, too!
