Behind the Scenes with SuperWHY’s Creator

by Jodi on August 6, 2009

Readers already know that my kids absolutely love SuperWHY.  So when I had the opportunity to visit Boston PBS headquarters a few weeks ago to discuss the “behind the scenes” aspects of SuperWHY with series creator Angela Santomero (she also created Blues Clues), I had to go!  PBS Parents and 360 Public Relations were kind enough to arrange child care at the event, so my children were also able to attend and meet with some of their favorite characters, like Curious George and Martha (from Martha Speaks).

Although we are huge fans of the show, I have to admit I didn’t really know exactly what went in to making each and every episode.  After attending the event, I have to say I’m even more of a fan!  Here’s some of the information I learned:

  • Angela created the series as part of her doctoral dissertation
  • SuperWHY’s characters were each created with a backstory.  Whyatt, for instance, is the little brother of Jack and the Beanstalk.
  • There’s actually independent evidence that shows SuperWHY helps with early reading skills.
  • Angela’s kids actually help her create some of the stories – such as the Rapunzel story.
  • Significant research goes into each and every episode.  After storyboards are created with first drafts, they are read to young children to see how they work in a real-life situation.  Stories are changed if they don’t resonate with their intended audience.
  • The PBS Parents website includes some fabulous content, including activities, lesson plans, viewing tips, and so much more — for FREE!

I’m looking forward to working with my kids on some of the printable activities, as well as some items PBS provided us with, in the upcoming week – stay tuned!
