Avoiding the Toxins in Laptop Cases with GreenSmart

by Jodi on August 11, 2009

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know there were toxins in neoprene. Products made with that material, including laptop cases, can have allergens and other toxins that can irritate those with sensitivities.

GreenSmart, a company whose products we’ve reviewed in the past, has created neogreene, an alternative to neoprene that’s greener.  Currently, neogreene is being used for two products – laptop sleeves and bottle holders.  Here’s what neogreene offers:

  • All water based adhesives
  • No Chlorine
  • PVC & Lead Free
  • No Formaldehyde
  • No VOCs
  • 25% less petroleum than neoprene
  • 25% less energy (compared to producing neoprene)
  • Even the green coloring of the Neogreene is a water based dye (neoprene cannot be dyed)

Laptop sleeves are available to fit a variety of laptop sizes from netbook sized to 17”.  I have one for my Macbook, and honestly, I really can’t tell a quality difference from neoprene and neogreene.  To learn more, visit the Greensmart website.

Do you want to win a laptop sleeve and bottle holder?  Visit the Greensmart website and come back here and leave a comment with what you like best about the new neogreene material.  We’ll pick a random winner on 8/30.  US Residents Only.

I love that they come in a variety of sizes for the laptop. I have had a hard time finding a sleeve that is small enough for my netbook. I also like that they help your laptop cool down faster.

I love that it’s toxin free! The smell coming from things made with neoprene has always worried me (not a healthy smell at all), so I love that there’s an alternative.

Neoprene requires solvents full of chemicals to glue the fabrics to the synthetic rubber. GreenSmart has developed a material with all the attributes without the hazards. Neogreene is water based chemistry that allows for water based adhesives that still provides the squishy and smooth material with a little bit of stretch. I like that development.
