I’ve been using distilled vinegar in the wash/rinse cycle. it really works in keeping our clothing soft.

For dried in stains on whites , try using lemon juice and placing the garment in the sun. Both the lemon juice and the sun will work as bleaching agents. This was a tip my grandmother gave me and it has saved many whites for me.

Coffee, Tea
Presoak item in liquid detergent with bleach. Wash using the hottest water temperature that is safe for the fabric.

Lestoil works great for getting out stains

My best laundry story is when I spilled a lot of red candle wax on my brand new white blouse. I thought that the blouse was garbage. I thought to try to wash it in hot water, with clorox bleach, to at least get some of the red wax off and then I could use the blouse as work shirt around the house. I couldn’t believe when I took the blouse out of the washer, that all the red wax was gone and there was no stains. Got to love Clorox Bleach!
Thanks for this giveaway. Great prize.

I use a paste of oxygen cleaner and detergent to remove stains by applying it directly to the stain. Works!

Thank you. :-)

Thanks for the giveaway… My wife’s laundry mantra for removing stains, “When in doubt, soak it overnight” in detergent.

13 Alicia Webster August 21, 2009 at 9:10 pm

My best laundry tip is to always use cold water. I have for years, and all of our laundry comes out just as clean no matter which detergent we use. It is eco-friendly to boot, and it saves us tons of money!

I steal other people’s clothes out of the laundry room. Problem solved! Seriously, I love Gain detergent and Gain fabric softener. The smell is fantastic. My best tip is to use quality ingredients – you get your money’s use out of it.

16 Diane Baum August 21, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Funny story? My college roomie suggested I add a little bleach to the dorm washing machine before I use it. I guess a half of a cup, doesn’t mean a little? You should see , what it did to my jeans.

17 Mary Ward August 21, 2009 at 9:36 pm

My tip, and one I often don’t follow, is to make sure that the pockets are empty on your husband and son’s pants! I washed some lovely gum into my clothes the other day.

18 Amanda August 21, 2009 at 9:49 pm

21 Theresa August 21, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Well I left the top to the washer up the other day & my cat fell in! He’s fine, but I nearly died laughing. ;)

22 Jenn H August 21, 2009 at 10:51 pm

Worst laundry story. I have washed everything. Chapstick, money, wallet. But the worst was my Husband’s cell phone. Mind you he upgraded to a Blackberry but I still get flack about it.

23 karenM August 21, 2009 at 10:51 pm

for tough greasy stains, I spray 409 on the spots, works like a charm.

24 Lauralee Hensley August 21, 2009 at 10:55 pm

My best laundry tip is always check the pockets of everything you are planning on laundering. This has saved me grief more than once. It has saved ID badges, ink pens without lids from leaking, facial tissues from getting lint all over everything, and believe it or not even saved a live tiny frog’s life.

26 Kerrie Mayans August 21, 2009 at 11:08 pm

My best laundry tip is to clean out kids pockets before you wash them. I can’t tell you how many times I have washed and then dried either crayons or chapstick and messed up an entire load of laundry. Now I always check any pants or skirts before they go into the washer.

husband was going out of town and threw clothes in the washer to be helpful..well I washed them and tossed them when I was half asleeep when I was in the dryer and becuase there was a comforter in there still damp just left it in…what happened?/ I have a beautiful polka dotted flowered comforter becuase he left sharpies in his pocket.

32 shel August 22, 2009 at 1:16 am

My best tip is to recycle those old toothbrushes; I use them to scrub stains. I keep a few old toothbrushes right next to the washing machine; a squirt of stain remover and a soft scrub with the old toothbrush helps remove stains before washing.

48 Maureen August 22, 2009 at 6:53 am

I worked in a Pizza shop, one of the kids there managed to get pizza sauce on a new light blue tshirt.. He said I guess I will just trash this when I get home. He figured the sauce would never come out.. It is known to stain.. I told him to give me the shirt and I would try washing it with some Clorox Bleach when I got home. He said that will ruin it.. I was like its already ruined.. let me try.
Took it home.. placed it in the washer, with just a small amount of Clorox bleach.. agitated it for a bit.. then turned off washer and let it soak about 30 minutes.. Finished cycle and it came out Clean…
Thanks Clorox… You saved the day again!

Best Laundry Story: An ex-boyfriend of mine used to ‘demand’ I do all the household chores, even though we both worked. So one day, when I went out to the laundromat, I decided to go to a different laundromat than the one I always went to. I went 10 miles away to another one! lol! I put his laundry to wash, left the laundromat, left his clothes there, and left him that day! lol! I don’t know if he ever found his clothes! lol! Thank you for the contest!

59 Deborah R August 22, 2009 at 10:43 am

For the best smelling laundry, hang your clothes outside to dry. It’s a little more work than using the dryer, but it’s also free.

60 Tamara B. August 22, 2009 at 11:10 am

I like to have three hampers in my laundry room to keep my laundry organized. One for the whites, one for the lightly colored clothing and one for the dark clothing. If there is a stain on the clothing I always pre treat it the minute I find it.

My laundry story – a few weeks ago I let me 2 year old help me move clothes from the washer into the dryer. Apparently when I stood up to get a dryer sheet he slipped a green crayon into the dryer as well (he always carries around crayons thanks to Blues Clues so I always check pockets before I wash). When I went to fold the dry clothes later I found brights green patches of melted crayon all over just about every piece of laundry. Lesson learned – keep a close eye on my little helper in the future LOL. By the way, if anyone knows how to get melted crayon stain out of clothes I would LOVE to know the secret

75 Linda Lansford August 22, 2009 at 2:53 pm

My best laundry tip is to seperate your clothes by color and texture. This prevents colors from bleading into your other items and same texture clothes dry well together

76 Karen B August 22, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I really like the Spray n Wash with resolve in it, it truely does what it says it does. For instance My hubby got Speggetti sauce on his white shirt and I sprayed some spray n wash on it and when it came out of the washer the spot wash gone. Also a lot of you mommy use clorox, as do I, but the smell of clorox is sometimes overwhelming even after they have been dried, so this is why I use spray n wash, because of the less harsh smell.

Thanks for the WONDERFUL giveaway!

LADIES – before you let your boyfriend, husband or significant other go near the washer & dryer with any of your outfits that you still want to wear in public, get a laminated copy of the Complete The Cycle Regimen Guide and go over it with them step-by-step… and be sure to post it afterwards in a clearly visible location nearby. The only upside to some of the laundry (horror) stories I could share is that I was able to replace entire ensembles as I saw fit with nothing but ‘blessings.’ That’s my best laundry tip and I’m sticking to it! ;)

One tip that most of you may know already, I learned from someone who works in a bra shop. She said to wash your bras by hand with a mild soap because some detergents may eat at the fabric.

129 Aimee W. August 24, 2009 at 3:46 am

Here’s a GREAT tip I recently found on the internet. This tip works wonders if you notice that your washing machine has a funky, mildew-y smell…
PLEASE NOTE: Run the cycles below with NO clothes.
* Add 2 cups of bleach to machine
* Set your washer to the high level load on Hot / Hot
* Once machine fills, stop cycle and let it sit for 1 hour
* After an hour, run the cycle
* Now, add 3 cups of white vinegar to machine
* Set your washer to the high level load on Hot / Hot
* Once machine fills, stop cycle and let it sit for 1 hour
* After an hour, run the cycle
* Now run a normal cycle with detergent
All finished! Your washer (and your clothes) should no longer have that dirty and/or mildew smell!

130 Ivy Farkas August 24, 2009 at 3:47 am

Always use tide, it is just better at getting your clothes clean with using less and will actually save you more, plus it really protects the clothing, doesn’t make them fade as bad. AND: Stay away from Gain, it fades your clothes faster than any I’ve ever used, (which is all of them, I think!!!)

When I wash my husband’s filthy work clothes I fill the machine with hot water, detergent and the work clothes, agitate a few minutes and then shut the machine off and leave it for about a half hour. This seems to help loosen all the gunk up!

137 Tarah August 24, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I always take the pants out of the washer and shake them out and fold them before putting them into the dryer. They don’t dry strange and leave odd creases that way.

138 Jessica C August 24, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Always, always, always use COLD water~!

139 shelly August 24, 2009 at 2:03 pm

my best laundry tip is to ALWAYS check your pockets for chapstick or kleenex… i have learned that lesson the hard way

140 Gloria S August 24, 2009 at 4:27 pm

hair spray on ink stains will take them out.

141 Lisa Duffy August 24, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Well the best story I would have to say would be when I left a tiny little AZO pill in the pocket of my pants and then did the laundry and everything came out this odd orangish yellowish color. Not a color you can typically find anywhere. Remember when they tell you may stain clothing. Well they were correct!

142 kristina jones August 24, 2009 at 8:37 pm

tip, make sure no jewelry gets caught up in your laundry. I ruined a beautiful necklace this way.

144 Katherine August 24, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Put the detergent in and let the washer fill then add the clothes. Also don’t over fill the washer because your clothes will not get as clean. Sometimes Prell shampoo will get out set in stains.

148 Jacquelyn Cannon August 25, 2009 at 12:06 am

My best tip is to wet and scrub the stains on the clothes with Ivory soap. Then soak in cold water for about 10 minutes. Now place the clothing into the washing machine. This gets difficult stains out all of the time.

For all the little blood stains that can ruin good clothes, just use a little bit of peroxide and run it under luke warm water. It’s the only thing that I have found that really works right before your eyes. :)

153 Paula H August 25, 2009 at 12:09 pm

I have found that liquid dish detergent is a good stain treater. It’s great for removing grease and food stains. I’ve also had it remove chocolate.

My best laundry tip – I use a stain remover immediately for spots I know won’t come out if I wait till wash day. Also, clean your dryer’s lint trap after every cycle. It’s amazing how much a clogged trap slows down the drying process.

156 shirley August 25, 2009 at 4:20 pm

I have used it on stains that have set for a few days.

167 Lucy Schwartz August 26, 2009 at 1:16 am

168 Sonya August 26, 2009 at 1:18 am

My best laundry tip is if you get ink on your clothing, try blotting it out with rubbing alcohol or hairspray if that’s all you have. Go from the outside in and make sure you have a cloth behind the material so it can have a place to go as it doesn’t really disappear, it moves. If all else fails, use an Oxygen type cleaner, it takes awhile but it works! I know this cause my husband left some ink pens in his pocket and they slipped by me and they almost ruined an entire load of clothing, ugh!

My favorite tip is to use salt – if you get blood or red wine on clothing (or a carpet) and cover it with salt, the salt will draw the stain up and out and it’ll wipe or vacuum off, then just a regular wash takes it out completely

199 Yvonne Butler August 26, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Best Laundry Story. First my oven went out. One week to the day, the dryer quit and the next day the Washer quit. They were all really old. Next day my income tax refund came in and me and my daughter took her truck and went to Lowe’s. It was already dark when we got there because my mail doesn’t run until around 3 o’clock and we had to deposit the check and travel about 35 miles. But…. we came home loaded down. One stove, one washer and one dryer. After I checked out I had one dollar and some change left. Just what I needed for all three. Isn’t God Good. All at exactly the right time. If they had quit a few days later my check would probably been blown on something else and I would not have had the money to replace them. Going to the laundry mat was not a option. I don’t drive. Tip: Wash new dark items with about 1/2 cup of vinigar to set color so it will not fad. Thanks for the entry

200 Pamela August 26, 2009 at 7:35 pm

So I was never a big tipper before until something ORANGE got on my new wedding dress. I almost had a panic attack. I calmed down and grabbed the OxyClean however instead of mixing it the way the bottle says to I made a paste out of the mixture and a small amount of water. It took 3 applications but the miracle paste worked!! My dress looks good as new!

I spilt candle wax on a dollie. I dunked it in hot water and the wax released itself and floated to the top. My best laundry tip is when washing bath towels you can use only half the required amount of laundry detergent you normally use for your laundry loads. Towels absorb the soap so much more than just plain clothing that if you use the full amount of laundry detergent you will not fully get all the soap rinsed out of the towels in one washing. So, you are not only wasting the laundry detergent, but also leaving laundry soap still in your towels, yikes! Who wants that?!

A good way to get lots of stains out is to run the clothing item through the regular cycle using cold. Rub the stain with either dish liquid or laundry liquid. Turn dark clothes inside out and wash in the coolest water possible; dry on lowest heat.

I presoak all my stains in biz the night before and they come out so much easier. Thanks!

My best tip is to try and let the kids help out (and think that it’s fun)

Presoaking helps. I like to use bar laundry soap to scrub socks before I toss them in the wash.

Years ago, My husband washed a load of his clothes – mostly underwear. Something red also made it into the load. He had pink undies. He was extremely upset – he had National Guard Camp coming up (3 weeks) and he went out and bought all new underwear, saying there was NO WAY he was wearing pink underwear to National Guard lol. lanemarinab@aol.com

This was an easy question for me. I have a laundry story that I’ll never forget. I was getting out the clothes in my hamper to do a load of wash and got the shock of my life when a lizard was hanging off the inside wall. After hearing my loud shrieks, my son came in and told me he was glad I found him because he had been missing for three days.

I add baking soda to delicates that need an extra boost. Works great on bras, gym clothes and light blankets.

Wash a little every single day so it’s not overwhelming!
