Back in July through Mom Select, I was offered the opportunity to host a Zhu Zhu Pet party for my daughter and her friends. I hadn’t heard of the pets before, but they definitely sounded like something my daughter would love, so I quickly signed up.
In the time it took to receive the pets and set up the party, these little hamsters became THE hottest toy for the holidays. My son and daughter were already playing with theirs, and they were a big hit – they move on their own, and while they work so well with the hamster trail accessories, Zhu Zhu Pets are lots of fun just on a plain floor.
The day of the party, we set up all of the hamster trails – originally I’d planned to use the kids’ train table, but the full trail set was a little too big for that. So, instead, we set it up on the floor in my daughter’s room. We also stacked up all of the hamsters (although in retrospect, I wish I’d taken them out of the packages in advance), and put out the extra batteries, just in case.
None of the kids who attended the event (or the parents) had heard of Zhu Zhu Pets – but the toys were a bit hit! Each play date attendee left with a Zhu Zhu Pet (with the exception of one sibling who arrived late when they were all gone – her poor mom is now looking all over for one). The kids took turns playing with the hamster trails, and there were definitely some kids who couldn’t get enough, while a few of the kids played for a bit then moved on.
I’ve heard from some of the parents that the kids are still playing with them. Some of the kids are even sleeping with their little pets (keep in mind that the company does recommend that batteries be removed before sleeping with them)! My kids love theirs, and especially enjoy playing with the trails.

Susan – good for you!
most places are totally sold out in our area and have no idea if they will get another shipment in before Christmas. So as a parent, that means your choice is an online store or no Zhu Zhu Pets…
First, thanks again for the tickets to the Boston Medical Center Halloween Town. I’m headed there with my family this Sunday. Looking forward to spending some time with my family. I was supposed to work, but got someone to swap days with me. Now onto the topic of Zhu Zhu Pets. They are actively advertising on TV. My 5 year old daughter’s eyes got big and round when she saw them. She hasn’t stopped talking about them. I got an immediate call to the TV with the accompanying “I WANT IT”. I agree these toys are going to be hot.
I have never head of a toy party. Man that is a great idea, plus it give kids a chance to interact. Sounds like the zhu zhu is a great way to start.. Great idea, had never heard of it but now I am thinking of trying it out myself. Hopefully I can get my hands on the zhu zhu from my local toyrus I hear they are hard to find

In my opinion, they are the hottest toy in town now because Zhu Zhu pets are “kids friendly” and children won’t get tired of playing with them.

Hello, I have been looking every where and Zhu Zhu pets are always sold out as stated previously and the only place that you can find them are online on ebay and amazon etc… the only problem with this is they are selling them for 16.00 to 35.00 a piece and thats with out shipping! What a rip off! I just found them today at a local walmart here in utah and they wont sell the hamsters because they say they are recalled but they were still on the shelf, it was very disappointing! I cant find anything from the cepia that says that they are recalled or why and I tried to call and couldnt wait on hold any longer and sent a email. So they sure look like fun but, I feel their are going to be alot of disappointed children come christmas when their parents couldnt get them due to recall, unavailability (due to scalpers, who buy or bought them all out and then sell them online for an outstanding amount). They should be availble to purchase by any one not just the rich.
We are had hard time finding the Zhu Zhu Pets and accessories in our area. We had to wait for the daily shipment to arrive at Wal-Mart and wait for the Zhu Zhu Pets to be placed on the shelf. There were a number of other people just waiting for them to arrive. We were one of the lucky one. My granddaughter got her hamsters and funhouse for her birthday and love them.

Awe, so cute and no dead babies!
It is truly amazing how quickly these pets have taken over the top sales spots for toys. Some kids just can’t get enough of them as you say. I suppose they are little critters (which kids love) that move about and make little noises, which kids also love. They are simply dominating the toy sales right now. Amazing!

What’s amazing is how fast theses little guys are flying off the shelf! Other than eBay it may be hard to find them in a couple of weeks.

These zhu zhu’s are worth $30+. This is pure open market capitalism at its best. One point that a lot consumers have not considered, is there are a lot of people who live tens, hundereds, or maybe even thousands of miles from the nearest Target, ToysRus or Walmart and don’t have the convienience of waltzing into their neighborhood store every morning at 8am to see if more ZhuZhus have arrived. Really, if you lived 200 miles from the nearest Target, is it worth your time PLUS the $40 you’ll spend on gas to drive there and back to purchase an $8 toy? Hell no! It’s in fact cheaper to buy it for $30 on ebay.
If stores sold them for 20-30 bucks(the current market value)there would not be a supply problem.
I just bought 2 Zhu Zhu hamsters on ebay for $86.00!! Both of my children want one for Christmas and I was told that no body will be getting any in before Christmas and if they do it will be in small quantities, So my chance of getting them before Christmas was slim so I paid the HUGE price and bought them on Ebay. Sad how people buy them just to sell them for these extreme prices because they know parents will buy them for their children.. Especially when its all your child wants:(
