Working in schools provided my with so many wonderful experiences. One of my favorites was participating in read alouds. I love the group reading experience and watching kids get pulled into another world. I have to admit that on occasion, I had to make sure I made room in my schedule to continue on with the stories. I was just as captivated as the students. Books that can grab and keep your attention like that are always to be treasured. Leaving the Bellweathers, a debut novel from Kristin Clark Venuti, is one such book. Likened as a cross between The Addams Family and Cheaper by the Dozen, Leaving the Bellweathers is witty, silly, and quirky.
Although my sons are a little young for young adult literature, I can’t wait for the day that we can begin reading chapter books at night together. Leaving the Bellweathers will definitely be on my list of books to read with the boys. The plot revolves around an odd family, the Bellweathers, and their loyal butler, Tristan Benway. Benway is coming to the end of his family’s pledge to serve the Bellweather family and is readying for his retirement. Through his journal and the ‘tell all’ book he is writing, the reader learns all about the idiosyncrasies of each family member and the crazy situations that they land into.
