The Best iPad Apps for Kids

by Jodi on June 2, 2010

An admitted technology lover, I had to run out as soon as the iPad came out.  While at first, I wasn’t really willing to hand it over to my kids, I quickly found that I can keep them busy for large spurts of time with some great iPad apps.

Dora the Explorer Coloring Adventures - offers coloring sheets with a variety of scenes, as well as “stickers”, this app kept my kids busy during our long flight to Orlando this month.  They just can’t get enough of it!   The app is available for $4.99.

Shockwave.com’s Daily Jigsaw – my kids love puzzles, but they, of course, aren’t super-portable for travel.  This iPad app, based on Shockwave.com’s most popular titles, allows users to download a new puzzle each day.  My five-year old is able to do them herself (level one, and she’s upgrading to level two), and my three-year old can do them when I activate the feature of only including the edges.

Toy Story Read-Along – this app really showcases the graphics of the iPad – it’s an interactive story, and includes puzzles, songs, and other elements of the story. Even though this movie came out in 1995 (can you believe it??), it’s among my son’s favorites.

The Princess and the Frog Read-Along – my daughter is obsessed with Princess Tiana, and loves the Princess & The Frog, so I knew she’d love this one.  Like the Toy Story Read-Along, it includes puzzles, songs, and other interactive elements.

Super WHY! – my kids love Super WHY! and the iPad app is perfect for them, because it includes the elements of the show, but in a more interactive way.  They love “finishing the story and saving the day!”.

Disclosure: I received complimentary copies of these apps.
