Right before BlogHer, I had the chance to talk with fitness expert Denise Austin, who singlehandledly kept me in shape throughout college with her awesome video tapes. Denise gave me some fabulous tips on how moms can keep themselves healthy and in shape while still running their households.
First, she recommended making sure your family eats a healthy breakfast. While this can sometimes be difficult on a busy mom’s schedule, some products, like Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon can help make things easier. You can even make the bacon in advance and prepare a little bit at a time. After the jump, you can find some of Denise’s approved recipes.
Next, we talked about keeping in shape. Denise recognizes that it’s difficult for busy moms to find the time to workout. She recommends that moms start with a just ten minutes of exercise, working up to at least 30 minutes each time. Everyone has ten minutes, right? You can even do several ten minute increments, if that’s easier for you. Eventually, you’ll start to enjoy the feeling you get when you workout, and will want to do even more.
Finally, we talked about how moms can get rid of that excess flab around the belly, and Denise recommends a three-pronged attack. You’ll need to do a good cardio workout, targeted exercises on the abs, and watch your calorie intake. I’m working on that, but of course, it’s easier said than done.

I have been a fan of Denise Austin for years! She is true to herself and others. Plus her workouts are great! My tip would be to “Move” everyday, as much as you can! ~ Take Care
I take the stairs if available.

My best tip is to keep food and working out fun. I love dancing around with my son or playing soccer with him. But as soon as I think of exercise as work, I lose motivation!

I hate to jog, but I do find that it works for shaping up and burning calories so I do a combination of sprinting and walking for a set distance (usually 1 mile). By allowing myself to walk a bit I find it a lot less intimidating and a lot easier on my knees.
I subscribe through Google reader and email.

I do simple stretches in the kitchen while cooking dinner, quick and easy. Drink lots of water to help curb my cravings.

My laundry room is in the basement, like most people. I like to try to either sprint up the stairs every time I go up and down, or do a march, bringing my knees up high when I walk up them. It’s a little thing, but when you have 20 loads of laundry a week, it adds up!
