Today was the fourth day of my new fitness routine and I’ve been struggling with when to exercise. Do I put on workout clothes and be ready to go as soon as I drop the kids off at school? Or do I get everything done before I even bring them to school? Or something in between? Here are my options:
Option 1: The “I am all ready to workout as soon as I’m done here” option.
In relation to my schedule, this is my least favorite option. I pretty much need those six hours between when I drop the kids off and when I pick them up. But, if I can’t workout and shower all before drop off, this works. Plus, it says to all of the other parents, “I’m super fit – look at me heading to the gym. I have so much leisure time I can just spend the day exercising”. And it adds an air of mystery – maybe I’m going to yoga. Maybe I’m taking a tennis lesson. Who knows?
Two cons – one is that my children may destroy my home while I’m exercising in the basement. Another is that I pretty much have to wear my lululemons – sweats don’t work in this instance.
Option 2: “The I Exercised and Already Showered Before School” option
This is the preferred option, although on many mornings, I’d rather just sit nursing my coffee and reading Facebook while I wake up slowly. I can also wear whatever workout clothes I want – no one is going to see them.
One con – This is the same look as the “I’ve Completely Given Up on Exercise” option I was rocking before.
Option 3: The Hybrid, “I Exercised but Haven’t Showered Yet” option
This is best for my schedule, but kind of nasty.
Con – I also have to wear the lululemons. Have you shopped there before? It isn’t cheap.

I don’t know how far the drop off is, but you could get a jogging stroller and turn the drop-off itself into a workout. Our daycare is only 2 miles from my house, an easy run to pick-up and drop off the little one. She likes riding home in the stroller. The only weird part is running with an empty baby jogging stroller on the way to get her – I get some weird looks from people in cars passing by.
My kids are way too old for a jogging stroller, but I do walk them to school sometimes…
Do you have to get out of your car for drop off?
Yes, except in bad weather when I can drive them.
