Choosing a Baby Carrier

January 13th, 2007

When my daughter was born, she was premature, and therefore enjoyed being held closely.  I had seen a selection of baby carriers at my local baby boutique, so I went in and purchased a sling, which could be worn over one shoulder, and allowed her to sleep in almost a cocoon position, while I was able to walk around hands free.  After she got too big for me to hold her that way, I used a baby carrier that put the majority of her weight on my shoulders, so that I couldn’t handle carrying her for too long in it.

When my second child was born, I had hoped he would like the sling also, but instead, he preferred to be held upright.  In fact, he hated the sling.  I went online and researched carrier options, and found that he would most likely prefer a wrap or a Mei Tai.  I bought both, and found that he loved the closeness of being held in the wrap.  Once he got bigger, he preferred the Mei Tai and another, more structured carrier.

My point in all of this is that there are many different carrier options, and each child is different.  If one carrier doesn’t seem to be working for you, there are plenty of other types that you could try.  We will be reviewing a variety of different carrier types in future posts, or ask your question in the forums!
