Entertaining, Educational, and Unique

February 26th, 2007

My toddler just loves music, and recently she has started enjoying television also.  As a concerned parent, I do try to limit it and also participate with her, but finding good shows can be difficult.  Our attempt to buy DVDs to always have on hand actually hasn’t been all that successful.  For some reason, she isn’t all that interested in the ones we had received.  I can see why!  Making a DVD that is entertaining, educational, and unique, as well as appropriate for a toddler, must certainly be difficult!

We recently discovered Juno Baby, which has filled this void in the market nicely!  Belinda Takehashi, the co-founder of Juno Baby, is an award winning composer who was unhappy with the selection of music DVDs available.  She really felt that children should listen to classical music performed by real orchestras, not synthesized renditions.  Juno Baby includes music composed by Belinda, as well as classical music composed by Mozart and others, and performed by orchestras.

The DVD that we have, “Indie’s Great Teddy Bear Hunt” is captivating and educational.  My toddler actually said, “I LIKE that song” during one of the musical selections, Pop!  The music is very catchy and well performed and will capture your child’s attention.  The characters include a little girl named Juno, a bunny, and a cat, and they speak directly to the child and are bright and colorful.  I am amazed at how many times she wants to watch this DVD - in a row!  After it’s over, she wants to watch it again and again.  It’s very rare that I can find something that is so captivating.  Even our baby smiles and glances at the tv.

Because the characters are so captivating, Juno Baby has branched out and created a Juno plush toy, a line of apparel with the characters on them, and a CD.  The plush toy is also very bright and my daughter loves it!  She carries it around everywhere!  The t-shirts are brightly colored and wonderful, thick quality.  The CD is perfect for the car or on the go if your child enjoys the music on the DVDs.

I’m not the first to rave about Juno Baby though.  They actually won three coveted awards in 2006 - the iParenting Media award, the Parent’s Choice award, and Dr. Toy’s Best 100 Products and Top 10 Video List.  I’m looking forward to purchasing more DVDs from Juno Baby - we’ve watched Indie’s Great Teddy Bear Hunt A LOT!

[...] 5. If traveling by car, the importance of a DVD player cannot be understated. Although I don’t believe in tons of television for my sons, this is one occasion where it can make a somewhat unbearable situation tolerable. Some of the areas we drove through were exciting for my son, lots of trucks or farm animals to look at. Unfortunately, the terrain became flatter and less interesting for him as we moved along. Having a few Thomas and Friends episodes for him to watch or a Juno Baby DVD (see our earlier review) really helped. [...]
