Camp Baby Part II

April 16th, 2008

Read the first part of my Camp Baby redux.

Day 2: Sessions!

I woke up super-early (think before 4am) for day 2 and unfortunately could not get back to sleep.  In desperate need of some coffee, I headed down to breakfast right on time, and found the nearest open seat.  I was pleased to be seated right next to our first speaker of the morning, Dr. Jodi Mindell.

Highlights: Dr. Jodi Mindell

Dr. Mindell, the author of Sleep Deprived No More provided us with some great information and advice about getting kids to sleep.  Of particular relevance to me was the discussion about how to handle early wakers.  Dr. Mindell suggests putting a nightlight on a timer, and telling your child that he/she can get up when the light is on.  For early wakers, set it at their usual wake up time and then progressively move it later.

Highlights: Dr. Scott Jens, OD

Dr. Jens, the chair of http://www.infantsee.org, spoke to us about the importance of getting your baby’s eyes checked before they are 12 months old.  The InfantSEE program provides free access to an eye-care doctor who can detect problems more accurately than a pediatrician or family doctor.  Interested parents can visit the website to find a participating doctor near them.

Highlights: Dr. Germ

I can’t really go into all of the things that Dr. Germ said were, well, germy, because I’ve tried to forget about them.  Otherwise, I wouldn’t go out in public.  The takeaway here is that it is so important to wash your hands frequently.  And, don’t use an ATM in an airport.

Breakout Session:

Okay, here’s where I’m leaving the updates to the experts.  I highly recommend you click over to Plain Jane Mom and read Erika’s version of the breakout sessions.  Because she’s a lot funnier than I am.

Dinner:

Remember my pre-4am wakeup?  I really started suffering at dinner time.  However, it was such a great opportunity to catch up with everyone, enjoy a great dinner, and have fun checking out the Nintendo Wii.  Dinner was at the http://frogandpeach.com/, which was “closed for a private party” just for us!  The food was excellent, and honestly it was the perfect venue because it was just the right size and had the coolest little side room for the Wii set up!  Even better - all of us mommy bloggers got a Nintendo DS of our very own to take home!

Part III coming soon…..
