Last month, I attended Honda’s Ride N Drive event in La Jolla, CA to learn about the all-new 2011 Honda Odyssey. I wasn’t really a fan of minivans in the past, but after test driving the Volkswagen Routan in July, I was starting to come around. Then, after this event, all I can do is dream about driving one of these all-new Odysseys.
We had the opportunity to not only drive the vehicles ourselves, but also to learn from the engineers who worked for many years on the features and functionality of the 2011 Odyssey. The two-hour drive, which was mapped out for us, included city, town, highway, and mountain driving.
I set off with Renee from Mom in the City, and she took the first leg of the trip, which was primarily town and city (small city…) driving. We had a quick driver switch break at a local golf course, and then I took over. My drive was around sharp mountain turns, and on the highway. While I was nervous about driving to begin with (I don’t like driving), the mountain driving terrified me a bit. But surprisingly, the Odyssey handles amazingly well, and I felt very comfortable after a short time.
The 2011 Odyssey has some fabulous features, including my favorites (features vary by model):
- 16.2-inch dual-view-capable ultra-wide DVD Rear Entertainment System with HDMI input (wide-screen, but shorter, so it doesn’t affect the view out of the back window when backing up)
- Seating for 8
- A hard-drive in the stereo system – your CDs can automatically be added so you don’t have to carry them around with you
- Back-up camera with wide-screen and top-down views in addition to the standard rear view
- Loads of room for cargo
- Premium audio system with 12 speakers
- Retractable trash bag holder
- Cooler box which keeps up to four water bottles cool
- 5 LATCH-capable seats
- Bluetooth capabilities
This is truly a car that I’m considering for our family. It’s almost PERFECT for us!

Disclosure: Honda paid all of my expenses for the Ride N Drive Event. In addition, they are sending me to Beverly Hills for the Variety Power of Women event where I will be a red carpet correspondent.
