School started on Wednesday here, which kind of changes the whole Labor Day dynamic. Instead of it being an unofficial end of summer celebration, it’s just a weird day off just three days after starting school. I’m not sure I totally agree with the timing.
Regardless, my little lady started 2nd grade, and my little guy started first. I was a little worried about the transition for him. Kindergarten is all about protection – a separate playground, indoor morning lineup, and warm and nurturing teachers that hug sad children. First grade is full immersion in the dog-eat-dog world of elementary school, and they are left to fend for themselves on the playground.
To make matters even a bit more scary, my son was placed in a combo 1st/2nd class. While I think this placement is ultimately what’s best for him, we were both a little nervous to see him line up next to those tall 7 & 8 year olds.
But, it turns out, I needn’t have worried. He loves his new class, his new teacher, and the fact that he gets to play during recess with his big sister (his sister on the other hand? Not as excited). By day two, he ran to his line all by himself. On day three, they were both shooing me away.
Let’s just hope it’s the same after this long weekend.

It’s so hard to let them go, isn’t it? And I agree, such an odd time to start with the three day weekend. In another week you’ll feel less off kilter. Just think of how much work you’ll get done with your days to yourself!
The three day week is strange, but on a positive note, they are starting out slowly.
And yes, I plan to get lots done during the day.
My son just started kindergarten. I was worried about being at school with the big kids too, on the bus, all of it. He is, so far, having a grand time. Kids manage stuff much more easily I think, because they don’t know about the stuff we know that we worry about. Sometimes ignorance truly is bliss.
So true – ignorance is bliss!!
