Family Winter Vacation in Lake George, New York

Powered by Whrrl

Last month, the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council invited my family to experience family winter activities in Lake George. We aren’t really a skiing/sledding type family, despite the fact that we live in New England, but it was something we were definitely interested in experiencing. Turns out, we really are a skiing family – we had a fabulous time and can’t wait to return.

In total, we spent three nights in Lake George – two at the Holiday Inn Lake George, and one at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center.

The Holiday Inn Lake George offers suites and rooms – we were given a wonderful two-room family suite, complete with mini-fridge and microwave. The Holiday Inn has complimentary high-speed internet access as well as indoor and outdoor pools. Kids eat free in the on-site restaurant (with a few restrictions), and the hotel has been recently renovated and updated. We absolutely loved it there, and definitely will stay there again on our next trip.

For our third night, we stayed at the Fort William Henry Suite and Conference Center, right near Lake George Village. This hotel is so convenient for those traveling in the summer, because you can walk right down to the beach. The view is absolutely beautiful from the hotel. For those looking for different accommodations, there is also more motel-type rooms in the premium and standard sections.

While we were there, we were definitely busy. The first day, we went to the indoor water park at the Great Escape Lodge, and my daughter especially loved it. She could have stayed all day and night, just sliding and playing, but
we had more on our agenda. We had lunch at the on-site Johnny Rockets (which was delicious!), and then headed back to our hotel to rest.

The next morning, we headed out to Gore Mountain for our ski lessons. The kids and I had never skied before, so we were each enrolled in ski school. The kids went to the Kids Kamp, which is a two-hour ski lesson with a short hot chocolate break, while I had a private lesson. I was actually able to watch my kids while I was in my lesson, and I couldn’t believe how much they progressed in just a few short hours. By the end of the two hours, they were already skiing down a (very small) hill, turning and stopping on their own. I was really impressed with Gore Mountain – the staff is enthusiastic and friendly, and there are so many people around to help.

On our last day, the Fort William Henry Hotel had arranged for us to visit Tubby Tubes, a winter tubing park a few miles away from Lake George. For my daughter, this was the highlight of the trip. You can purchase a two-hour ticket, and slide as much as you’d like. We got there when it opened, and had the chance to tube at least twenty times in the two hours before heading home.

We are definitely now a skiing/sledding family, and I can’t wait to return to Lake George!

Disclosure: This trip, including hotel accommodations, activities, and the Johnny Rockets lunch, was provided to us at no cost.
