Sonicare Challenge: First Full Week

by Jodi on July 30, 2010

IMG 0603 225x300 Sonicare Challenge: First Full WeekIn our first full week of the Sonicare Challenge, my biggest challenge was getting both of my little ones acclimated to the electric toothbrushes.  I’d purchased a cheap electric toothbrush for her a year ago, and she was so afraid of it that we ended up using it as a manual toothbrush.  So, I knew I had to tread lightly with both kids.

When we opened the electric toothbrush, both kids were so excited about their “big kid” brushes.  With my son, I used the brush manually first, then turned it on.  He loved it, but even now, I still have to start out with it in manual mode.  I proceeded the same way with my daughter, but now she’s absolutely fine with me using it in electric mode.

Win it! As a SonicareChallenge family, I have the chance to give away replacement brush heads to one winner!  Each winner can only win once (across all of the SonicareChallenge giveaways), and giveaway ends 8/10/10.   You’ll win 2 replacement brush heads to whichever brush you own. US Winners only.  More giveaway rules here.

Dustin Pedroia Salem Five Teaching Kids About Finance (and an Autographed Baseball Giveaway)Those who know me know that I’m passionate about teaching kids about personal finance.  I’m also a big Red Sox fan, so I was pleased to hear that one of my favorite players was teaming up with a local bank, Salem Five, to help educate kids about money.

I don’t usually print press releases or emails verbatim, but in this case, I think it’s appropriate:

“Salem Five is focused on educating kids about financial responsibility through their Gold Star Saver program.  The Gold Star Saver is an interest-bearing savings account with no fees for children under the age of 18 and is co-signed for by parents. Salem Five will match the first $10 deposited and provide an ATM card, with parental approval. The new website takes the child’s savings account to the next level, providing an interactive place to explore personal finance topics.”

Salem Five also put together a survey, the results of which revealed effective ways to educate kids about money, including:

1.       Kids listen to you
·         91% of kids say their parents teach them about money.
·         35% of kids say they would save better if they knew why they were supposed to save money.

2.         Don’t feel bad about dragging them to the bank… they learn
·         91% of parents use life experiences to teach kids about money.

3.         When you are at the bank, open a kid’s savings account
·         58% of kids ages 7-12 have a savings account, average age when opened: 5 yrs old.
·         Of kids who have savings accounts:
·         98% understand where money comes from
·         95% understand the importance of saving for the future
·         90% have a good understanding of money/finances

4.         Learning about money can be fun
·         64% of kids like to play games that teach about money
·         Of kids that like to play games to learn about money:
·         83% like to do things to earn their own money
·         72% wish they had their own bank account

5.         Make communicating with your kids about money a priority
·         29% of children pay attention all the time when their parents talk to them about money.
·         46% of these good listeners are children of parents who make communication a top priority.
·         86% of kids who have parents that make communicating about money a priority say they know how to save for something big

The Gold Star Saver site (www.salemfive.com/goldstarsaver) offers the following features for kids:
·         Dustin Pedroia videos with his personal financial tips and experiences
·         Tools and calculators to help plan for saving, giving and spending
·         A Message Board for sharing tips or asking Salem Five bankers questions
·         Links to on-line games, books and other learning resources
·         Financial terms glossary for kids

Win it!  Salem Five is offering one of our readers a Dustin Pedroia autographed baseball!  To enter, leave us a comment below letting us know what you do now to get your kids to save?  Contest ends 8/5/10 at 11:59 ET.  US Winners Only. More rules can be found here.

Kidz Bop 18: Music For Kids Sung By Kids

by Jodi on July 27, 2010

My daughter (and to a lesser extent, my son) loves music, especially pop music.  We’ve reviewed Kidz Bop before, and the latest edition, #18, has recently been released.

Kidz Bop 18 includes the following songs

  1. Telephone
  2. Baby
  3. California Gurls
  4. Hey Soul Sister
  5. Do You Remember
  6. Naturally
  7. Whataya Want From Me
  8. Nothin On You
  9. Break Your Heart
  10. All The Right Moves
  11. Two Is Better Than One
  12. Evacuate The Dancefloor
  13. Billionaire
  14. Alejandro
  15. Breakeven
  16. Single Ladies
  17. Falling For You
  18. One Day
  19. Fifteen
  20. Solo
  21. Not Myself Tonight

All of the songs have been “sanitized”, for example, in Billionaire, he wants to be a billionaire so “very” bad rather than so “freakin’” bad.  My daughter loves listening to this CD, and has even grabbed her microphone and sang along!

You can learn more about Kidz Bop on their website.

Disclosure: I received a copy of Kidz Bop 18 at no cost.

My son loves any toy playsets that he can use to spark his imagination – from Legos to trains and other little character toys.  We received a sample Pop On Pals playsets just in time – my husband and I had just returned from Martha’s Vineyard and my son was disappointed that his only gift was a pirate tee shirt.

We have the Pop On Pals Amusement Park playset, which comes with a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, milk toss game, and as well as a set of characters.  The toy is appropriate for ages two to four, so my son is on the older end of the spectrum.  However, he still enjoys playing with it, and does quite a bit of interactive play with it.

I like the idea of this toy for younger kids also, because the pieces are large enough for little hands, and it’s a toy that will appeal to them as they grow.

Visit their website to learn more about Pop On Pals.

Disclosure: I received a sample of Pop On Pals at no cost through Team Mom.  Opinions are all mine!

I recently had the chance to catch up with the owners at Petunia Picklebottom and wanted to share some of my favorite picks from their spring collection (and some hints about things to come!)

Shopper Totes: I’ve been using Petunia Shopper Totes for the past year and can’t tell you how many compliments I get on them.  Not only are they stylish, but they are sturdy and a perfect blendsleepysantorini 576 sl 300x216 Spring Has Sprung at Petunia Picklebottom of Petunia’s combo of fashion and function. My favorite feature (and why I continue to reach for them as opposed to the other reusable bags I have) is that they conveniently fold up and “lock” closed. So until I need them, they stay compact and easy to store.

New Spring Fabrics: Every season, Petunia offers a new collection of drool-worthy colors and patterns and this spring is no exception. (From L to R, Moment in Morocco Shoulder Bag, Venus Roll Boxy Backpack, and Tea on the Thames Crosstown Clutch.) From left to right, the Sightseer is made from organic cotton and comes in a variety of prints, the Tour Guide is made from ec0-friendly materials including a recycled PET exterior and recycled nylon interior, and finally the Scout Walkabout gives dads something to don. Taking the 30 Day Sonicare Challenge!

by Jodi on July 24, 2010

My family has been selected as a Sonicare Family, and all four of us will be using brand-new Sonicare toothbrushes.  My husband and I are using the Sonicare 2 Handle 5350 Sonic Power Toothbrush, while the kids will each be using the Philips Sonicare for Kids HX6311/02 Rechargeable Toothbrush.

I’ve used electric toothbrushes before, but the last brush I owned, the Ultreo, was discontinued, and the brush heads are no longer available, so I have been really looking forward to trying a new toothbrush.  My kids, however, have never used an electric toothbrush, so we’ll have to do a little bit of work to get them acclimated to the motor of the brush.

Here’s a Whrrl showing our shopping trip for the toothbrushes:

More check-ins at Wal-Mart

Here are the other participating families!

Disclosure: I received money for my participation (from Sonicare and Collective Bias) but as always, opinions are my own.

Secrets to Summer Grilling with Beef

by Jodi on July 24, 2010

Summertime means grilling season here at my house, and we’re always looking for the best ways to grill meat without burning, over- or under-cooking.  Chef Dave Zino, Executive Chef of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, offered to write a guest post for us with tips on how to best grill beef this summer.  Any questions?  Post a comment here!

—–

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Chef Dave and I’m the Executive Chef for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. We’re the organization behind the iconic “Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner.” tag line and you may also be familiar with our popular cooking Website, BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com.  When I heard that Jodi was happy to have me pen a post, I jumped at the opportunity. I love talking about all things beef!

We’re officially in the heart of summer and I hope that by now, you’ve had a chance to fire up your grill and cook for family and friends. Summer entertaining, whether it’s for a party of ten or a family of four, can be simple, turnkey and an absolute breeze. If you’re already thinking about a Labor Day soirée, it’s never too early to plan! Be sure to reference our handy tips on how to buy in bulk for large crowds and where you can find the best value in beef (e.g. evaluate prices based on cost per serving v. cost per pound).

Choosing lean cuts at your grocer’s meat case shouldn’t be intimidating – it should be affordable, quick and easy. In fact, we recently launched the Interactive Meat Case, a new Web tool designed to educate consumers on the cuts they find in today’s case, so feel free to use it to solve any confusion you may have.

And speaking of mouthwatering cuts, there’s nothing like a juicy lean, T-Bone steak (yes a T-Bone is one of the 29 lean cuts!) accompanied by a melody of seasonal summer veggies. Red and yellow bell peppers are an all-time favorite of mine. I actually worked with our culinary team to develop four official recipes for the summer grilling season:

Cooking with beef is fun and easy, and with some tips and tricks for grilling, I’ll show you how to get the best out of beef this summer.

Secrets to Successful Grilling with Beef

10. Know your grill Always cook over medium heat, be it on a gas grill or charcoal, my preferred way to grill.

9. Visit the Interactive Meat Case a new Web tool designed to educate consumers on the cuts they find at the meat case. Good cuts for the grill are Top Loin, Top Sirloin and Tri-Tip steaks. Also, BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com is a great resource for grilling recipes, tips and info.

8. Understand the difference between a rub and a marinade Beef from Chuck, Round, Flank and Skirt are excellent candidates for a tenderizing marinade. You’ll need acidic ingredients (lemon or lime juice, vinegar or wine) or a natural tenderizing enzyme (found in fresh ginger, pineapple, papaya and figs) for the best marinade. Rubs are also great for steaks on the grill. They add interesting flavors and enhance the natural goodness of beef. A dry rub is a mixture of dry spices and herbs (normally use these mixtures on steaks) and a paste rub incorporates a liquid into the spice mixture, such as olive oil or mustard.

7. Trim, if necessaryRemove visible fat from steaks before grilling to help prevent flare-ups and excess smoke formation.

6. Keep beef refrigeratedGrilling times are based on beef being taken directly from the refrigerator to the grill – not at room temperature. Shape burgers in advance, cover and refrigerate until the grill is ready.

5. Encourage browning Pat marinated steaks dry before cooking to prevent steaming and to promote browning.

4. Turn properlyUse long handled tongs to turn steaks and a long handled spatula to flip burgers. Never use a fork to turn steaks or burgers as you will puncture the beef and flavorful juices will escape.

3. Practice food safety Always swap out the platter the raw beef was brought on and bring the cooked beef to the dinner table on a new one.

2. Internal temp mattersCook medium rare (145°F) to medium (160°F) for optimal beef flavor, texture and tenderness.

1. Use a thermometerThe best way to determine doneness of burgers and steaks is to use an instant-read or ovenproof meat thermometer.

I really look forward to staying in touch and hope that you connect with me on Twitter @zcooks and become fans of our “Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner.” Facebook page. If you have any questions, I hope that you’ll post a comment and Jodi will connect with me so I can send along a quick answer or provide a helpful link to online info.

Best wishes for a delicious and safe summer grilling season!

Sun-Free Golden Glow with SunLabs

by Kate on July 24, 2010

mareesw071100013 Sun Free Golden Glow with SunLabsWhile I love that summer glow as much as the next person, the potential for skin damage is too high of a price. Fortunately, I’ve discovered SkinLabs sunless tanners. I’ve tried a number of products over the years – from drugstore brands to celebrity-endorsed tanning sprays – and SunLabs has some of the best color yet.

I’ve had the chance to try two of their tanning lotions – the Tan Overnight self-tanning lotion and the Ultra Dark Tanning Lotion.

SunProduct 20020 224x300 Sun Free Golden Glow with SunLabsTan Overnight Lotion – As the name suggests, this lotion is meant to be applied at night or whenever you have 2-3 hours to let the color develop. There is a tint in the lotion so you will see some color immediately, but the color changes, deepens and gets so much better after a few hours. The tinted lotion makes it easy to see where you’ve applied, it rubs in streak-free and it dries quickly. It also doesn’t have any of that telltale “sunless tanner smell” to give away your secret.  But best (and most importantly) of all – it provides great golden color.

One caveat – the initial color is not super flattering. On my skin, the tint in the lotion seemed to have a hint of an ashy-greyish-orangey-brown color that was not complimentary. Not horrible, but it definitely had me a little worried the first time. The end result however is gorgeous – I’ll even agree with the website’s description that it gives you a “super hot golden brown tan.” It was good enough to fool my So-Cal-raised husband who asked if I spent the day at the beach. I have medium-light skin, but lent this to a fair-skinned friend who also got great results.

However, those with darker skin might want to try….

SunProduct Group Medium 224x300 Sun Free Golden Glow with SunLabsUltra Dark Tanning Lotion – unlike the former product that requires a few hours to develop its true shade, this lotion provides immediately color. This is the Ultra Dark (SunLabs also offers an even darker version called Dark Sunsation) so the color that comes out of the bottle is, as you might expect, dark. But once again, the color goes on evenly and scent-free. This was a bit too dark for my skin tone, but for my medium-skinned neighbor, it worked like a charm.

A few application tips….

- Exfoliate beforehand. SunLabs makes a nice exfoliator that comes in their gift packs or can be purchased separately. It sloughs off dead skin and leaves your skin soft, lightly moisturized and prepped for the tanning lotion.

- Use gloves. The first time I didn’t and while I scrubbed with soap immediately after applying, my hands still had a slight tinge to them. The next few times I used gloves and was much happier – I know all the product is getting rubbed into the intended area and not absorbing into my hands.

- Don’t judge based on your first application. As with any new product, you have to get the hang of how much lotion you need to cover an area, how it spreads, how to blend, etc. My first application was so-so. My next dozen have been great.

- Use sunscreen! These SunLabs self-tanners don’t have sunscreen in them, so don’t forget to apply sunscreen liberally when you go out.

All products come in a variety of sizes as well as in gift packs or al a carte. Visit www.sunlabsonline.com or your local beauty salon or spa to purchase.
