Packing my hospital bag….

January 11th, 2007

It is mere hours before I’ll be heading to the hospital to deliver my second child. Have I packed my bag yet? Well…sort of! Between all of my chores….Nesting is a wonderful thing…I thought I’d stop and write about the all important and absolutely necessary items you need in your hospital bag. As this is my second visit to the hospital to deliver by c-section, I can’t say much about important labor items. However, I can talk about all that you might need after the delivery of your miracle. A nail file, moisturizer, face wash, lip balm, and deodorant may be forgotten but, are those items that you might want the most. I have already packed a nursing gown (those hospital gowns are drafty, uncomfortable, and just don’t offer adequate coverage for visitors), a robe, socks (cushy and chenille), a sleep nursing bra, and nursing pads.  One thing that you won’t need (besides the pair you show up with) is underwear…the hospital will provide comfy and disposable pairs for you to use. They are ugly but, definitely functional. Of course, you will want your camera/camcorder – to document those first few days of life and cell phone- dad can keep everyone in the loop (Don’t forget the chargers or extra batteries). If your spouse or partner will be staying with you, they’ll want to pack all of their toiletries, pillows, and a blanket. As for the baby, I will be bringing two outfits (for pictures –one smaller, one a tiny bit larger…just in case), socks (those little feet get cold), and a hat with his name on it. I’ve also included two freshly washed, soft receiving blankets. I just like the way the square shaped swaddle so easily. As of now, I think that’s all I need. There’s always the chance I’ll wake up at 2 am and pack just one more thing…but we’ll see. I’ll keep you posted!
