Skincare Series: Proactiv Review

by Jodi on May 25, 2009

We’ve all seen the commercials – amazing skin care results from skin care kits offered by Guthy-Renker, and endorsed by some major celebrities.  Gunthy-Renker send over a few intro kits for me to try, and I’ll be posting about my results here.

My skin: adult acne breakouts, loss of firmness, some discoloration, small wrinkles starting.  I’m always trying new stuff because I’m never happy with my skin.

The first product I’m reviewing is Proactiv, which has become quite popular over the years.  The Proactiv intro set includes the 3-piece system, which is a cleanser, a Glycolic Acid toner, and a Benzoyl Peroxide cream, as well as a bonus product (the Refining Mask).

For those suffering with adult acne, you know how difficult it can be to control.  Often adult acne is triggered by hormones, and so you are best using a product everyday to prevent blemishes, rather than treat them once they appear.  Proactiv claims to help with all kinds of acne, including the adult onset kind that I have.

My Experience with Proactiv

I enjoyed using all of the products, especially the toner which is really unique.  I’ve looked at the generic alternatives to Proactiv and none of the ones I looked at had a toner with Glycolic Acid.  The cleanser is nice to use (I only use it in the morning) and the cream is great.  The one thing to keep in mind is the Benzoyl Peroxide does bleach things it comes in contact with, so make sure it dries completely before putting your shirt over your head or sleeping on a pillow.  This Benzoyl Peroxide cream doesn’t dry out my face like others I’ve used have.  My face definitely cleared using Proactiv, so it worked for me.  Not every blemish was prevented, but that was also the case when I’ve used prescription products.

The Cons

Proactiv doesn’t cure all of my skincare issues, like loss of firmness and small wrinkles (but doesn’t claim to, either).  In addition, the bleaching aspect of Benzoyl Peroxide is something you do need to watch out for.

Overall, if you are suffering from acne, it’s worth checking out to see if it will work for you.  You can purchase online at Proactiv.com

Did you not have issues with it causing your skin to dry out too much? How long did you use it? I’ve tried it several times but can’t get over the dryness issue…

Leslie – I find that my skin dries out if I use too much, but not if I only use a small layer across my whole skin. I do use a moisturizer separately also.
