We absolutely LOVE pens. Some are definitely better than others though. We put together a list of our favorite pens for planning, including links to purchase.

I’ve always been a pen addict, and it’s only gotten worse with all of the options available on the internet. I spend a lot of time writing in notebooks and planners, and always want to have the best pens to use. I can’t seem to take a trip to an office supply store without buying a whole collection of new pens, and I have a definitely preference – fine tip gel pens. Although admittedly, if something looks fun, I’ll buy it, even if it’s not my usual type of pen.
When I’m planning, I often color code things – choosing different colors for each member of my family. I also tend to doodle in my planner, and don’t like when the color of my pen bleeds through the paper. I do sometimes add things to my planner which are tentative – and for that, I prefer to use pens that can be erased.
Out of all of the pens I’ve used, here are the best pens for planning in my opinion.
The Best Pens for Planning
Pilot FriXion Pen Set – these pens erase, making them perfect for “penciling” in tentative plans.
Poppin Aqua Signature Pens – these pens come in a variety of colors and look great on your desk.
Foray Pens – I love these pens. They may bleed through thinner paper, but I love using these to color code.
Pilot Juice Pen Set – These ballpoint pens are also great for color coding. They are fine tip and are great for writing small.
Triplus Fineliner Pens -Another great set for color coding. This set comes with a variety of colors.
Le Pen Set – These are a classic. I use them on my monthly calendar.

LOVE Frixion pens – except the light colors. They’re kind of useless since they don’t really show up on dark paper like a regular gel pen (at least not in my experience). LePen brings back memories of middle school!

I currently switched from an Erin Condren planner to an Emily Ley Simplified Planner. In my old Erin Condren Planner, I used Papermate pens but they tend to bleed a little. I’ve heard Le Pens recommended several times. Do they bleed through paper easily? Does anyone have experience with the new 2017 Simplified Planner and the new paper? I’m curious if that affects the pen choice.

Can you tell me what planner (the red one) that is in the first picture.
Jodi Grundig says
Hi! It’s actually a fuchsia Filofax. It’s available on Amazon, but has 2015 inserts.

I’ve found that if you do a lot of layering work w in the the frixon pens they rip through the paper, after just a few times over the same line. Not even mentioning if you try and erase it.
