This year, like just about every year, I set a goal to prioritize my health and fitness, and to get in shape. But, unlike other years, I actually followed through this year, and am ending the year 10 pounds and countless inches smaller. And, more importantly, I feel and look better. Here are the tips that worked for me. Please note that these tips assume that you are healthy enough to exercise – please check with your doctor first. I’m not a doctor or fitness expert, so these should not be considered expert tips.
Get In Shape When You Aren’t Motivated
Talk to your doctor
Before you start any fitness routine, it’s essential that you talk to your doctor first. A physician will determine if you are healthy enough to exercise, and maybe even give you some ideas for what exercises to try.
Get your “before” ready
The idea of a “before” picture intimidated me, so I just took my measurements and my weight. Although, now, I wish I had the pictures. Getting results is a huge motivation, so having that information is so valuable. Evaluate your results on a regular basis – I find monthly is most effective. As I saw the inches go down, I was even more motivated to keep doing what I was doing.
Identify any roadblocks and fix them
My biggest roadblock was my schedule. Unlike some people, I don’t really like working out first thing in the morning, but I also don’t like to work out in the evening. I found that 10am is the best time for me. I can get some work done first thing in the morning, take a break, and then continue working. I also don’t like spending hours working out, so I try to find the most efficient workouts possible.
Find what your roadblocks are, and make sure you find solutions for them. Then schedule your workouts – even add them into your planner.
Once I miss a workout or two, it’s so challenging to go back to working out. Consistency is key for me, which means I often need to bring exercise equipment along with me on vacation. I also have a hotel room workout that I use when there is no hotel gym (I also use the 7 minute workout app and do it three times).
Find what you love
I don’t like working out, at all, but I do like some stuff more than others. I’ve found that I love pilates and free weights, so I make sure I incorporate those things into my weekly workout.
