Now that it’s summer, parents are searching for things to do to keep the kids entertained, and to keep their minds working. But summer is also a great time to teach them life lessons. Remember that your kids will learn more from watching you than from listening to what you tell them to do, so don’t just teach these lessons – live these lessons.
5 Lessons to Teach Your Kids
It can be really difficult for kids to understand why some people have more than they have. But it’s important to teach kids to be grateful for what they already have. Show that you are grateful, and help them help others by delivering food to a pantry or visiting an animal shelter.
How to follow rules
We tell kids to follow our rules all the time, but guess what? If you aren’t following the rules, you are teaching them not to. So even if everyone ignores that “no parking” sign at school, remember that with your actions, you are showing them how to behave. My kids notice every time I do something I shouldn’t do.
The importance of fitness
As someone who was naturally skinny throughout most of 20s, I never really developed the habit for fitness. I’ve really had to make lifestyle changes now that my metabolism has changed. I know that my kids look to me as an example, so I try really hard to show them that I value physical fitness, even when I can’t get motivated to work out.
You get what you get
“You get what you get and you don’t get upset” is a big motto in our household. This is a great lesson to teach kids early, but it’s important that you also live this motto.
It’s amazing how far good manners can take you in this world. Teach your kids to say please and thank you, to wait their turn, and to be gracious, and the world will be their oyster.
